Why Time Management is Important

If you are leading people, you probably have a lot of topics coming at you, from people and HR topics, to product delivery topics, operational issues, and so forth.

It is very easy to get buried in minute details and think you have to solve everything for those around you.

This is not what you should be doing.

What you should be doing is working on things that have the highest value to your goals. Once you understand how to do that, you will want to coach your team to do something similar.

The Work Funnel

Imagine your daily work as though it were going through a funnel.

Work goes in the top, and a smaller amount (the work you actually need to do) comes out the bottom.

Along the path through this funnel, we are going to reduce the amount of work you need to do, in order to free up time to ensure that you have space for the really important stuff.

The following sections, in order, will arm you with the basics:

  • Do a Work Audit: Establishes where you are currently spending your time
  • Prioritize Work: Implement the funnel above
  • Time Management Techniques: Follow some basic time management techniques to ensure that you can make the best use of your time
