The Tree of Leadership
Think of your leadership like a tree. What you see above ground - your influence, your results, your reputation - is only possible because of what is happening below the surface.
The Tree of Leadership is a way of visualizing the layers of development that support effective leadership over time.
Roots: Personal Practices
The roots of the tree are your daily personal practices - the habits that sustain you physically, mentally, and emotionally. These include exercise, sleep, nutrition, mindfulness, and continuous learning. Without strong roots, the tree cannot stand.
Roots are invisible to others, but they determine everything. Leaders who neglect their personal practices eventually become brittle - effective in good conditions, but unreliable under pressure.
Trunk: Foundational Skills
The trunk represents your core leadership skills: communication, active listening, and the ability to give and receive feedback. These are not soft skills - they are the connective tissue of everything a leader does. A weak trunk limits how much the tree can grow.
Branches: Leadership Capabilities
The branches are your higher-order leadership capabilities: setting direction, developing your team, delegating effectively, managing stakeholders, and delivering results. These are the skills most people think of when they think of leadership - but they depend entirely on the trunk and roots beneath them.
Leaves: Influence and Impact
The leaves represent your visible influence and impact - the outcomes your team produces, your reputation as a leader, the culture you create. Leaves are the most visible part of the tree, but they are the last thing to grow and the first to fall when the system underneath is weak.
The rest of this module works through the roots and trunk. The branches and leaves are covered in Modules 3 through 5.
